Straddling the Willamette River, Oregon’s largest city offers culture, history, coffee, and lots of books. While Pacific Northwest winters may be damp, outdoor beauty abounds year-round. Forest Park, a 5,200-acre space that provides refuge to native wildlife, offers easy access to hiking and mountain-biking trails. For a scenic stroll, head over to the Lan Su Chinese Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, or the International Rose Test Garden.

Portland is home to many family-friendly attractions, including the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the Pittock Mansion, the Oregon Zoo, and Oaks Amusement Park, one of the oldest continually operating amusement parks in the country.

Plus, readers rejoice—the City of Roses is home to Powell’s, the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world. Once you’ve picked out a book, grab a cup of coffee at Portland Coffee Roasters or Stumptown.

Well-known for its festivals, fairs, historic landmarks, and outdoor recreation opportunities, Youngstown may come from humble beginnings, but it’s quickly growing into a hub for young professionals and families. The city, once home to some of the biggest steel-producing manufacturers, is tucked along the Mahoning River and about an hour drive southeast of Cleveland.

It has well-respected schools, a low violent crime rate, and boasts plenty of cultural attractions, such as the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, the Lanterman’s Mill and Covered Bridge, and the Mill Creek Suspension Bridge.

There’s also the Ward Beecher Planetarium, which hosts public shows on the topics of space, earth science and astronomy, and family-friendly gatherings year-round, like the Old-Fashioned Christmas in the Woods Festival.
